Konkan Road Trip from Mumbai: The Perfect 5-Day Itinerary

Why Drive Konkan?

The Mumbai–Goa highway (NH 66) and the parallel coastal roads that weave through Konkan are among the most scenic drives in India. Tunnels through the Sahyadri mountains, bridges over tidal creeks, views of the Arabian Sea from clifftop roads, and the scent of salt and jackfruit through the car window, a Konkan road trip is an experience that stays with you.

Day 1: Mumbai to Alibaug (95 km)

Leave Mumbai early (6 am) to beat traffic. Take the ferry from the Gateway of India to Mandwa (1 hour) or drive via Pen. Alibaug is your first base.

  • Morning: Arrive at your Alibaug homestay. Freshen up with a breakfast of poha and chai.

  • Late morning: Walk/cycle to Alibaug Beach and wade out to Kolaba Fort at low tide.

  • Afternoon: Drive 15 km to Kashid Beach for a swim in clean waters.

  • Evening: Sunset at Revdanda Fort or beach.

  • Night: Back at your homestay for a home-cooked Malvani seafood dinner.

Day 2: Alibaug to Murud-Janjira to Dapoli (130 km)

After an early breakfast, drive south on the coastal road. The drive past Shrivardhan and Harihareshwar is spectacular.

  • Morning: Boat trip to Murud-Janjira Fort, the undefeated sea fortress.

  • Afternoon: Continue south toward Dapoli, stopping at Harnai fishing harbour.

  • Late afternoon: Check in to your Dapoli homestay.

  • Evening: Walk to Ladghar or Murud (Dapoli) Beach for sunset.

  • Night: Dinner featuring local Dapoli specialities, ghavan with coconut chutney.

Day 3: Dapoli to Ganpatipule to Ratnagiri (70 km)

Dapoli to Ratnagiri is the most picturesque stretch of the journey, winding roads through jungle, creek crossings, and sea views at every turn.

  • Morning: Sunrise at Anjarle Beach and visit to the famous Kadyavarcha Ganpati temple on a cliff.

  • Midday: Drive to Ganpatipule, visit the Swayambhu Ganesh temple and beach.

  • Afternoon: Check in to your Ratnagiri homestay.

  • Late afternoon: Visit Thiba Palace (residence of Burma's last king in exile) and Ratnagiri lighthouse.

  • Night: Seafood dinner at your homestay, fresh-catch fish is guaranteed.

Day 4: Ratnagiri to Sindhudurg (Malvan/Tarkarli, 145 km)

This is the longest drive of the trip. Leave by 8 am to enjoy the journey.

  • Morning: Stop at Jaigad Fort, a 16th-century fort at the Shastri river mouth.

  • Midday: Drive through Devgad (famous for Alphonso mangoes, March–May).

  • Afternoon: Arrive at Malvan/Tarkarli homestay.

  • Late afternoon: Scuba diving or snorkelling session at Tarkarli (book in advance).

  • Evening: Boat ride around Sindhudurg Fort.

  • Night: Authentic Malvani dinner, the culinary highlight of the entire trip.

Day 5: Malvan to Vengurla and Return to Mumbai (Optional Loop or Fly Back)

Depending on your schedule, spend the morning in Malvan before heading back.

  • Morning: Fish market at Malvan harbour, a colourful and chaotic experience.

  • Optional: Drive 40 km south to Vengurla for the hidden rock beach.

  • Return route: Via NH 66 and the Mumbai–Goa highway.

  • Or: Fly back from Dabolim (Goa) airport, 90 km from Malvan.

Road Trip Practical Tips

Best Vehicle

An SUV or a car with good ground clearance is recommended for the coastal village roads leading to homestays. The main NH 66 is excellent but side roads can be narrow and occasionally rough.

Fuel Stops

Fuel up at every major town. Petrol stations are sparse between Dapoli and Ratnagiri.

Connectivity

Jio and Airtel work in most town areas. In valleys and forest stretches, expect dead zones. Download offline Google Maps before leaving Mumbai.
